To hotlink to an outside URL, you can just put the link in single square brackets like this:

[http://img2.timeinc.net/toh/i/a/tools/wood-ashes-00.jpg]

which renders as: [1] -Otter Jenkins 15:12, 22 August 2012 (PDT)

What I think you want to do, however, is probably try to find a free or public domain image (i.e. from Wikimedia Commons or some other source), and upload it to this Wiki and link to it from there, which allows you to embed the image like in my user profile. -Otter Jenkins 15:16, 22 August 2012 (PDT)
