To hotlink to an outside URL, you can just put the link in single square brackets like this:

[http://img2.timeinc.net/toh/i/a/tools/wood-ashes-00.jpg]

which renders as: [1] -Otter Jenkins 15:12, 22 August 2012 (PDT)
